Is there a minimum age requirement for completing MEWP training?

With the exception of Lift Truck operators, there is no minimum age outlined in any UK legislation for plant operators.

Lift Truck operators in the UK must be over the minimum school leaving age (except in docks where they must be at least 18 years old).

You can find out more here: HSE Workplace Transport FAQ

Is there an upper age limit for completing MEWP training?

No.

Do I receive a MEWP licence when I complete this training?

There is no such thing as a license as such, for any piece of plant machinery in the UK.

The term ‘licence’ suggests a document issued from a governmental or other constituted authority to operate a MEWP. No such authority exists; there are only accrediting bodies and training providers who operate independently of the HSE or any other government organisation.

Successful candidates do receive a certificate and photo ID card, sometimes referred to as a MEWP ticket; this provides evidence that the candidate has completed training and is certified to use the equipment as outlined on the certification.

MEWP training courses teach proper operation of mobile elevating work platforms. Successful candidates on the MEWP operator course qualify to operate the platform for temporary work access to areas, normally at height, learning basic equipment mechanics, stability principles and advanced maneuvering.

MEWPs, often referred to as Aerial Work Platforms (AWP), can provide features to the workman such as power supply for tools; any specific requirements can be factored into MEWP courses. Guidance to candidates on specialist personal protective equipment (PPE) such as fall arrest harnesses, instruction on the use of remote controls in case of emergency and general protocol for passengers’ and operators to ensure safety to all employees.

MEWPs can present a high risk of destabilising if operated incorrectly, a risk dramatically reduced by proper AWP training.

AWP courses can be delivered on the majority of mobile elevating work platforms. MEWP types such as the Scissor Lift or Cherry Picker get their name from the appearance or style of mechanism that elevates the work platform. Our work-based training programme tailors MEWP operator training to your equipment requirements to guarantee quality and relevance of training to your company.

Successful candidates receive AWP certification in the form of a MEWP certificate and photo ID card.

MEWP training is available across the majority of makes, models, types of machinery and attachments including but not limited to the following.

NOTE: If you do not see the equipment for which you require training this does not mean that our trainers / assessors are not qualified to deliver the training you need.
