First ever Timber Merchanting Apprentice completes his apprenticeship

The timber industry’s first learner ever to complete the Timber Merchanting Qualification is on his way!

Today Martin White received his certificate of completion of the Intermediate Level Apprenticeship in Timber Merchanting at MKM Building Supplies in Bridglington.

“It’s been a beneficial and brilliant programme! I really enjoyed it!” Martin White

He started as part of the MKM Saturday staff team and was taken on full time when he left school. He was eager to develop his knowledge in timber and panel products so the company supported his request to complete the new Timber Merchanting Qualification with one of our Accredited Training Providers, Didac.

Funded by the Skills Funding Agency this course covers all aspects of timber merchanting including: timber and panel products, purchasing, selling, customer service, stock and logistic operations and health & safety in the workplace.

Martin commented on the benefits of programme during his apprenticeship, “…the programme has boosted my confidence when dealing with customers and suppliers. Colleagues regularly ask me for advice, so I reckon I will soon be the branch expert!”

The ease of use of the portfolio manager and app have helped him to manage his independent learning and knowledge, “I like using the on-line e-portfolio system to collect the evidence I need to achieve my qualification. The phone app is great, because it helps me capture evidence during my day to day tasks, which I can upload to my e-portfolio.”

The qualification took him 12 months to complete and he is very keen to develop his career at MKM where he has already been in discussions on progression to the management course.
